Volunteer Outlook

Women in Horticulture runs on member time. This page explains common volunteer paths, what a typical season looks like, and how to raise your hand without promising more than you can give. If you are new to the group, start on the Women in Horticulture home page for the latest announcements, then read the About page for mission and pillars.

Most help shows up in short shifts: greeting guests at a lecture, setting up name tags, sharing photos afterward, or co-hosting a walk when you already know a site well. We keep tasks small so work spreads across many people instead of landing on the same few organizers week after week.

Event night roles

Arrive thirty minutes early to help with chairs, printed directions, and a simple sign-in sheet. During the program, one volunteer can watch the door, another can track time for speakers, and a third can collect feedback on index cards. Afterward, two people stacking chairs finishes the room faster than one person working alone.

Field days and garden visits

Outdoor programs need carpool notes, sunscreen reminders, and a printed plant list when possible. If you enjoy plant IDs, offer to read Latin names slowly and repeat common names so beginners stay in the conversation. If you prefer logistics, carry the first-aid kit, head count, and a paper map in case phones lose signal.

Digital and year-round help

Newsletters, photo captions, and calendar updates keep members informed between meetups. Spelling counts, but perfect design does not. Plain language wins: who, what, where, parking, cost, and rain date. If you can commit to one post per month, that already steadies the rhythm for everyone else.

How to say yes

Reply to the call for help with the shift length you can offer. If plans change, pass the task early so another volunteer can step in. We grow stronger when many people carry light loads instead of a few people carrying heavy ones. When you are ready, tell an organizer which of the roles above fit your schedule and we will match you with a concrete date.
