Garden Grown Volunteer Event at Tyler Arboretum

Women in Horticulture is made up of so many knowledgeable women from all walks of the horticulture industry. One of my favorite parts of attending WinH events is knowing that I will learn something interesting from another WinH member. WinH members lent their collective knowledge to Tyler Arboretum this past Saturday, July 28th for their Garden Grown Event.

This event was centered around their new Edible Garden. There were lots of fun things going on throughout the day, like salsa dancing lessons and a local restaurant made salsa using ingredients from the garden and served it to visitors. WinH volunteers staffed a "Right Plant, Right Place" table. Visitors were encouraged to check out our "Right Plant, Right Place" poster highlighting plants that work well in various conditions like sunny & wet, sunny & dry, shady & wet, shady & dry. You can download the "Right Plant, Right Place" poster here.

Visitors stopped by to ask us plant questions, check out our sample soil test kits from Penn State, browse our reference guides, and to just chat about plants! We also had a station set up for kids to create a collage using clippings from horticulture magazines.

We were glad we could help out at this event and the Tyler Arboretum staff were very appreciative of us volunteering our time. Thank you to all the WinH members who provided their expertise on a hot day! We were able to help out a number of people looking for answers to their gardening questions while spreading the word about Women in Horticulture!
